I started this blog because I stumbled across other bloggers who were trying to do the "Woman in Academic Science" thing. Most of the blogs are extremely encouraging to me for the simple reason that they reflect real life. I do not expect an academic career to be easy, rosy, or clear; the blogs that I read show me that these expectations are right on target.
One thing that has been becoming increasingly true is the realization that I want to be an academic. I can see that my chosen path will stretch me far outside of my comfort zone. However, there's a lot of power in knowing that I am choosing the path instead of being my advisor's puppet. Even though I'm on the front end of the graduate school experience, I'm coming to appreciate the uncertainty that is the journey.
I am looking forward to reading more from others who are at various points of their journeys while continuing to carve out my own path.

"I'm coming to appreciate the uncertainty that is the journey."
Well, that certainly puts you ahead of the pack! I'm such a control freak that (even though I'm at the end) I STILL don't appreciate the uncertainty. :)
Do what you love, leave every option open, and things will work themselves out.
I'm tagging you for the shuffle meme...
